Barrhaven Crime Prevention Ottawa Project Walter Baker Centre
Partners and Location
We were contacted by the Barrhaven CPO to guide youth through painting a sports themed mural. Project location was Larkin field house, an outbuilding on their sports fields with constant vandalism issues.
Youth Engagement
We met with youth at a legal graffiti wall to discuss the design and learn about street art. Participants were artistically inclined, some with a history of vandalism. We talked about their backgrounds and what they would like to learn. The group went over design ideas and sketched out a draft. Their idea was to incorporate sports with an urban flair.
Mural
The following week, the city put up installation boards facing the playground and field. Our group met youth at Larkin House and went over the final design. Lessons were given on different techniques with spray paint, including types of nozzles, shading, form, and color matching. Free time was given to practice. Youth primed the wall, and were guided through texturing the background. Lead artists then marked up the design, and worked with youth on filling in and detailing elements.
